چکیده
Abstract The charged particles in the solar wind are often observed to possess a nonthermal tail velocity distribution function, feature that can be fitted with Kappa model. anisotropic, or bi-Kappa, model of protons, electrons, and other is thus adopted literature for interpreting data as well context analysis wave–particle interactions. present paper develops an approximate but efficient theory mirror cyclotron instabilities excited by bi-Kappa protons wind. A moment-based quasi-linear these also formulated order investigate saturation behavior. Applications formalism made close marginally unstable state, which typical near 1 au.

Electromagnetic alpha/proton instabilities in the solar wind
The average flow speed of alpha particles relative to protons in the solar wind is observed to be of the order of or less than the Alfven speed. This flow, if sufficiently large, can lead to two distinct types of electromagnetic alpha/proton instabilities: magnetosonic and Alfven. Spatially homogeneous two-dimensional hybrid simulations of collisionless plasmas are used to study these growing m...
متن کاملIon Cyclotron Damping in the Solar Corona and Solar Wind
The solar corona is the hot, ionized outer atmosphere of the Sun. Coronal plasma expands into interplanetary space as a supersonic bulk outflow known as the solar wind. This tenuous and unbounded medium is a unique laboratory for the study of kinetic theory in a nearly collisionless plasma, as well as magnetohydrodynamic waves, shocks, and jets. Particle velocity distributions in the solar wind...
متن کاملSolar Wind Electric Fields in the Ion Cyclotron Frequency Range
In earlier papers (Kellogg and Lin 1997, Kellogg 2000, Kellogg et al 2001) which attempted to understand what effects were responsible for the violation of the conservation of magnetic moment in the solar wind it was pointed out that electric fields in the range which would resonate with the ion cyclotron frequency have not been adequately investigated. In most spinning spacecraft, fields in th...
متن کاملHeating of the solar wind with electron and proton effects
We examine the effects of including effects of both protons and electrons on the heating of the fast solar wind through two different approaches. In the first approach, we incorporate the electron temperature in an MHD turbulence transport model for the solar wind. In the second approach, we adopt more empirically based methods by analyzing the measured proton and electron temperatures to calcu...
متن کاملIon‐driven instabilities in the solar wind: Wind observations of 19 March 2005
Intervals of enhanced magnetic fluctuations have been frequently observed in the solar wind. But it remains an open question as to whether these waves are generated at the Sun and then transported outward by the solar wind or generated locally in the interplanetary medium. Magnetic field and plasma measurements from the Wind spacecraft under slow solar wind conditions on 19 March 2005 demonstra...
